Visit With Santa Canceled For 2021

Due to ongoing health concerns around COVID, we feel the responsible approach for Santa visiting with families was to cancel the event for 2021. We look forward to resuming this Thornapple tradition next year!

We wish everyone a safe, happy holiday season and a Happy New Year!

Playground Area Closed (until Saturday)

Hello Members,

We are having some repairs made to the playground surface, and it’s weather dependent. This is a follow up repair that was needed from earlier this summer that the vendor is conducting at their cost.  Please let everyone know in your family that no one should enter the taped off area until the caution tape is removed to let the repairs cure completely.

Thank you for your support and cooperation!

Leaf Wars: Update and Reminders

Hello members,

Fall is upon us and we are almost through the Leaf Wars for 2021.  We have many new homeowners in our community so we wanted to provide some food for thought as you wrap up your battle with Mother Nature this year.

  1. The City of Columbus does not pick up leaves from the curb, all leaves – including those that are in the gutter area in front of your home – should be bagged and set out for Recycling pickup.  The next pickup is Monday, Nov. 15th.
  2. Blowing your leaves into the street so they become someone else’s problem is not a good solution.  Many of you are blowing them back into the yard where they are more easily picked up. Leaves that are left in the gutter is unsightly, but more importantly, will eventually find their way to the storm sewer system and could cause blockage and backups.
  3. And finally – Recycling bags need to be properly stored (out of sight) until the next scheduled pick up.

Thank you to everyone who is putting in the extra effort.  We appreciate everyone’s cooperation and effort to get through fall cleanup and keep our neighborhood a beautiful place!

And a special shout out to “Charlie” for helping wrap up the Park Cleanup yesterday – thank you for stopping by and helping out.

Trick or Treat – Thursday, 10/28 – 6pm to 8pm

Because Halloween falls on a Sunday this year, the recommended Trick or Treat date for 2021 is Thursday, Oct. 28. Trick or Treat in Hilliard will take place rain or shine from 6pm – 8pm. Parents are encouraged to exercise good judgment in allowing children to participate.

We would also like to gauge the level of interest in the community to hold a Halloween Decoration Contest next year. Ideas submitted to date are for two categories; front porch /entrance and yard.  Would you like to see an event like that?  Let us know by responding to this post.

Known Website Issues – repeat

Hello Everyone,

We are aware that there are still issues with website services as of 9/6/21 (we posted the issue was resolved, but that appears to not be the case) and know that a few people have requested access, password resets, or have left comments/questions via the web form, which are not automatically forwarding to the board.  Until this matter is resolved please email directly to “[email protected]” with any request so they can be addressed.

We will post again when we resolve the current issues.

Sincerely,

2021 Board of Directors

Website Update: Email Issue has been fixed

Hello Members –

Thank you for your patience over the past week or two while our website service provider sorted out an issue with the emails that were being “forwarded” from our website.  There are several ways to communicate with the VAT Board and Service Providers and depending upon your request, those requests were forwarded accordingly (i.e. Architectural Request for Review Forms were forwarded to the ARC Committee, etc.).

We believe that all issues are now corrected, but you are always willing to cc or reach out directly to “[email protected]”!

If there is any request submitted to or through the VAT Website that you have NOT received a response or attention to, please let us know by either resubmitting the request or emailing the “what/when” to the Board@ email.

Sincerely,

Alert: Armyworms taking Ohio by surprise!

Hello Members of The Thornapple Association –

We were provided time sensitive information related to the growing infestation of Armyworms from Five Seasons Landscape (one of our service providers) and wanted to pass this along.

“We have recently seen an unanticipated infestation of Fall Armyworms in central Ohio. This armyworm is native to southern parts of the country but has migrated its way north due to some of the large summer Gulf storms we have experienced across our area.

The Fall Armyworm is different than the common Armyworm that is native to Ohio, which mostly causes damage in the spring to cereal crops such as wheat. We have seen lawns get devoured in just a few days once the Fall Armyworm larva starts to infest an area. Fall Armyworms feed on a range of plants, but they prefer turf, especially Bermudagrass, Fescues, Ryegrass, Bentgrass and Bluegrass. With all the rain that has fallen this year, most lawns are covered with lush green grass, and that has resulted in large populations of fall armyworms moving across lawns in a mass, devouring what seems to be every blade of grass.

Insecticides may need to be utilized to control large populations of Fall Armyworms from causing catastrophic damage to turf areas. Even if you have received an insect/grub application this year from Five Seasons Landscape, you may need to have an additional application of insecticide applied to control the infestation of this insect.

Fortunately, the Fall Armyworm only feeds on the upper portion(leaf) of the grass plant, so many times the plant will recover on its own. It is important to keep the crown of the grass plant moist during this recovery period by supplemental watering/irrigation. Also, an application of fertilizer can help the turf recover faster if there is adequate moisture, by providing nutrients to encourage new leaf growth. Your brown lawn may look bad for a couple of weeks, but in most cases the turf will recover with proper care.”

Park Update – Please help maintain our property

Hello Homeowners,

Recently we have had a rash of graffiti and vandalism on the park equipment that we are aware of and know that many of you have noticed.  While removal efforts and cleaning is done by volunteers we need your help to prevent this from happening.  First – see something, say something.  Vandalism, of any kind, will be addressed and involvement of the authorities is necessary.  Second – most people using the park are residents and (per Columbus Police Dept) vandalism of this nature is often done by the 12-15 age group.  Please note that anyone under the age of 18 are to be supervised while at the park.

Additionally, we want to address the trash can at the park.  This is provided for the benefit of the members but not intended to be a waste receptacle for pet waste, which is the majority of its contents.  This receptacle is maintained and emptied by volunteers – we do not pay anyone for trash removal – therefore, we need your help.  We love your pets, but please discard your pet waste in your trash can at home.

We are always looking for volunteers to help maintain the Association Property too!

Both of these items, when managed properly, help us to keep the annual membership dues low – one of the lowest in the area.

Thank you for your support, assistance, and participation in keeping our community beautiful.
